Baby on a budget

pregnant bellyWe have always been budget minded. Whether it’s due to the “rich one day poor the next” lifestyle we’ve occasionally had, who knows. But I’ve gotten to a point where I’m almost paranoid about our budget. (“Almost” being a euphemism for VERY!) So, as you can imagine, being able to make sure that even with the baby on the way I’m looking for ways to save.

Breastfeeding
Not only is this AMAZING for the baby, it’s also good for mom, (reduces changes of breast cancer as well as postpartum depression) as well as for the wallet! I just need to be sure I eat well, and I can feed my baby for free.

Co-Sleeping
I’ve found that co-sleeping helps both the baby and I sleep more! (And Daddy of course too!) In addition, no need to buy anything extra as far as sleeping arrangements; no crib or bassinet, no baby bed sheets…

Cloth Diapers
This one we haven’t done before, but will be for this baby. I’m looking into all kinds of ways to help this be even MORE cost effective, including used “Pre-loved” diapers, as well as the possibility of making our own.
So far, I’ve searched craigslist (see below), and found some that will help us get through a while for only $50. When adding up how much this would have cost otherwise we saves about 75%!

Craigslist
I’m also keeping an eye on craigslist for some of the stuff that I know we’re going to need, including things like a car seat, clothes… We found our car seat on craigslist, as well as diapers, (see above). We were able to get a gently used car seat for only $35, and it retails for about $200!

DIY
As I said, I’m looking into making our own diapers and/or covers. I’m also looking into making our own babywearing stuff! I’m also looking into what else I can make myself. (Which leads me back to needing craigslist for getting a sewing machine!)

Thrift Stores
So far, a lot of the clothes we have for the baby are from the thrift store. We were able to get about 15 outfits for $30. And as the baby grows, I can gift out the clothes and hit the thrift stores again for a great deal.

Gifts
We’ve gotten some of our stuff by gifting as well. Family and friends are passing along what they no longer need. And some, like my mom, has bought us some stuff new that she wanted to be sure that we’d have… It’s not something that I would, (or do) count on… but it sure is nice getting presents!

Deals
and some of the stuff has been bought on a whim, as it was on sale and I just couldn’t resist! Like I found a deal for a nursing pillow, where you only needed to pay shipping and handling… I know I’m going to want this, and paying $13 is better then the $45 price tag I’ve seen in the stores… though I might have been able to find it cheaper on someplace like craigslist.

Right now……

Ten o’clock on the “due” day.  Regina is asleep. no signs of labor yet, it’s imminent, yet obviously not right now.  It’s weird being so close, so on edge, so ready to jump.  Every minute that passes makes the next more likely to be when labor will begin.  Knowing
that your partner is going to have a baby, any second now, can drive one batty.   Oh my god. We. Are. About to have a BABY…..   ohmygod ohmygod ohmygod
ohmygod ohmygod

Life Aboard

Life on board, here’s the deal. I want to have the smallest possible negative impact on the earth. So I use resources with care. I grocery shop via bicycle or walking. I try to buy locally grown food. I use shared resources whenever I can. I patch my work cloths. I buy at thrift stores. I only buy used cars. I reuse and recycle. Our “tupperware” came with food in it. I bake my own bread in winter, because the oven is on anyway. My hot water comes from the stove too in winter. As a side note, home baked bread is about 1/4 the cost of store bought, tastes better, makes better french toast, grilled cheese, sandwiches, and uses less fuel!

Less space. A boat with the same floor space as your average American home cost a FORTUNE! Both to purchase and maintain. But what do you do with all that space? You fill it with stuff. Furniture to sit on and sleep on and eat on and store stuff in. Appliances to cook and store food, and wash your dishes and your clothes. You hang stuff on the walls, you fill your closets with cloths and towels and shoes. You might have enough dishes to serve a small army. Cabinets full of cookware you hardly use. On most boats the furniture is built in. There is storage under most of it. My living room has LOTS of storage space built in. Some of it isn’t readily apparent.

Living on a boat requires thinking about the things you buy. “do I need this?”. “do I want this, really?” “where am I going to put this?”. We keep the cloths that we use. We have a couple pairs of shoes each. We minimize our “stuff” to what we use and need. We save quite a bit of money just because we don’t have room for a bunch of crap.

Energy usage. House hold heating, cooking and lighting come from some combination of natural gas, fuel oil, and electricity. Up to 3 different bills to pay! Plus your water bill! Your toilet uses over a gallon every time you flush. It relies on gravity to carry its contents out of your house. Your sinks and showers mix relatively clean water with raw sewage and that nasty mix is piped to your local sewage plant in the city, or your septic tank in the country. Many cities end up pumping thousands of gallons of raw sewage directly into our rivers and oceans everyday.

Our galley (kitchen) is “compact” so we don’t have a bunch of kitchen gadgets. We keep what we use regularly. Our “food processor” is called a knife. Our “mixer” is a whisk, or spoon, or fork. Our “dishwasher” is a scrubby sponge and a sink. Our refrigerator is built into the countertop. It has more insulation than yours. It loads from the top so cold air stays in. Rather than falling out on the floor every time you open it. It uses about HALF the energy of a standard fridge. Our stove burns diesel fuel, which has more Btu’s per pound than natural gas. It also heats our whole boat in the winter. We actually know EXACTLY how much fuel we use in a year. In addition we can run our stove on bio-diesel. It is also the fuel for our engine, and at anchor is what we get our electricity from, currently. Our fresh water is stored in 3 tanks holding a total of around 300 gallons. Currently our water comes from our marina and is covered by dockage (rent) as is our electricity. Our toilet uses the water we float in to flush, and less of it than yours does. It pumps the contents to a tank. Our sewage, about 25 gallons a week, is stored on board in a tank. Once or twice a month it’s sucked out at the marina and ends up the same place yours does. (think about how many gallons of water you are polluting EVERYDAY!!!) Our sinks and shower drain overboard. We don’t own a washer and dryer. We use the local laundromat.

Schooner Eydis

This is the first little video tour of our new (new to us) sailboat, Eydis (pronounced EYE-dis). I did this little video within the first few weeks of having gotten the boat. As only Alan and I were there, I wanted to be able to share our new boat with our children, (who were visiting family in California at the time), our family and our friends.

What is Polyamory?

heart with infinity symbol that has come to be know as a symbol for PolyamoryIt is a hybrid word (how American), of Greek and Latin; Poly meaning “many” and Amor meaning “love”. It’s an alternative relationship style from monogamy. There are many forms of polyamory, poly for short.

Isn’t polyamory cheating?
No, it isn’t cheating. Cheating is about lying. One of the main things that separates poly from cheating is that ALL parties involved are consenting adults that are fully informed!

How many kinds of polyamory are there?
There are as many kinds of polyamory as there are people who practice it! Just like how each monogamous relationship is different, so is each poly relationship. Each relationship can also grow and change as needed, and as the members of the relationship change.

Some poly people have “group” relationships, for some it’s the freedom to have additional relationships separate from each other.

Isn’t it “swinging”?
Again, no. Swinging is usually a couple how engages in recreational sex. Polyamory, though it may include sex, it primarily about relationships. The sex in a poly relationship is not a “casual sex” situation, it is within a committed relationship.

Who lives/sleeps where?
Once again, it depends on the relationship. Some people all share a space, some don’t. Some that co-habituate share bed-space, some don’t.  It’s really all about the couple/group/family.

What about jealousy?
Jealousy is an emotion that comes from a feeling of insecurity. Do poly people feel jealous? Yup! The difference is, it’s something that we recognize and work through.

What about children?
There isn’t any “conclusive” evidence either way. However, in my experience, it’s actually good for the children. There is an extra person, (or people) able to help, love and support the children.

With the way that many current relationships play out, I don’t see how this is actually much different then what many children experience, except that it’s more supportive. What do I mean? With as much divorce and re-marriage as there is, there are so many children who have both their natural parents as well as additional “parental figures”, (ie step-parents). One of the possible big differences, is that unlike with divorce and remarriage, no divorce is necessary to have the extra parental figures!

I know you’re wondering…

Ok, I know you’re probably now wondering a bit more about us…  We basically have a group marriage, and all live together. Who sleeps where? I think I’ll keep that one within my family. LOL! Are my hubbies ever jealous? You’d need to ask them about it. Am I? Yup! Sometimes it’s them getting along, and me feeling left out (like when we go for car rides and they go all car-geek on me). Sometimes it’s when we’re keeping an eye out for a fourth, (we’re looking for another woman to join our tribe), but it’s something I keep working through. And about the kids? My daughters call the “new” hubby, (not their natural father), by his first name, and refer to him as their “step-dad” to people when talking about it outside the family. We’ll see how/if any of that changes when we have the new baby.

Reminicing about Guatemala

As it’s getting colder, I’m thinking back more and more to this past spring, and my family’s trip to Guatemala.

Last spring, part of my family, Alan, the girls and I, were invited to help move a sailboat from Guatemala to Key West, FL. Due to some “issues”, customs not approving a package the captain was waiting for, we ended up spending about a month at a marina in the jungle along the river Rio Dulce. We met some amazing people, and had a great time. The kids learned to swim. (Yes, they learned to swim on a jungle river in a 3rd world country! How cool is that!)

Starting all over again

Schooner EydisHello my dears.

After a very long time, today I had a friend convince me that I needed to start sharing more about my life… I do live an… ummm… unusual life. I figured I would go through some of my old blogs and see what I could grab, so I did. (Found some from 2007… It’s like a flashback!)

So, come and join me on my sharing on what’s going on in my world.

The Goal:

My goal is to share all kinds of info about my life. The ups the downs…

I want to try to start doing video logs, (vlogs), as well as writing and sharing my some of my photography.  I’ll also be trying to get other members of the family involved… So within the next bit (who knows how long) this blog may gain more focus, and who knows… maybe a real domain name. lol

The Family:

I’m currently a stay-at-home/work-at-home mom of two darling young ladies, and have a baby on the way! (No, I didn’t order it from babies R us… what a silly question! I’m pregnant!!) I also have the two best husbands a woman could ever ask for. (I can hear it now… “did she say 2?” Yes I did. And yes, they both know about it. No, they’re not gay. They’re best friends.) And we all live together aboard our sailboat!

Ok, right this minute we’re not all living aboard the boat. We have a few things going on, but by this February we will be!
